President’s Perspective: Story Construction, 90 years in.

In the spring edition of our StoryLine Newsletter, we took you back in time to look at past editions of the newsletter and featured a few projects and developments that are significant to us still today. Those newsletters highlighted projects for Green Hills Retirement Community and Iowa State University – still meaningful clients of ours . One explained the reorganization of the company in the 1970s, and another announced the transition of leadership that brought us to who we are now. That was our past. 90 years is a long time!

In this President’s Perspective, we turn to the present. In the fall edition, we’ll look toward the future.

So who are we today?

• We are 100% Employee Owned through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). We’ve always been some form of family- or employee-owned, but as of 2022, all employees have the opportunity to benefit financially from the company’s success.
• We are leaders in lean construction with the Story Way and Construction Production 2.0 as part of our culture. We recognized years ago that the traditional way of managing construction projects had become increasingly unreliable and stressful, and that something needed to change. Since then, we’ve been consistently improving our processes to bring joy back to construction.
• We are diverse in both who and how we serve, with experience in a variety of commercial and industrial markets and contracting methods in our arsenal.
• We are wired to stay local to Iowa, giving our team members an opportunity to work close to home more frequently. Our relationships with owners and building partners in central Iowa continue to provide us with opportunities to make an impact in our communities.
• We are growing our company to provide opportunities for people to develop in their career and to increase enterprise value for the benefit of our employee-owners.

In short, we are a long-time Iowa company that is relevant in our industry and community, and leading with our approaches to ownership, developing people and leading projects. I’m extremely proud to work among such talented building professionals and more importantly great people. Here’s to the next 90 years of Story Construction!
