This Easter, members of NorthPoint Church in Johnston experienced their the newly renovated community center and daycare center completed by Story Construction. The project transformed the church into a gathering space for not only the existing congregation, but for the local community interested in faith.

Story Construction was hired in 2024 having previously worked with Mantel Teter – the architecture firm serving NorthPoint Church – on an extensive renovation for Reach Church in Des Moines. That experience gave both Mantel Teter and NorthPoint Church confidence in Story’s ability to deliver this project.

“Church leadership noticed that our building was going largely unused during the week,” said Evan Redel, Director of Operations for NorthPoint Church, noting that a goal for the project was to create a space that the congregation could utilize continuously. With this in mind, the church decided to redesign the space to create a more open environment to further build a community within their walls.

This 30,000 SF renovation project with a 7,600 SF addition included expanding the daycare and office spaces with new finishes, as well as adding a café, pickleball court, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, and raising the ceiling to create an open structure ceiling. These changes added significantly more area for the congregation to visit before and after services, as well as throughout the day.

“The overarching purpose of the project speaks to sound stewardship and perspective,” added Redel. “Seeing a limited building be converted into an unlimited one has been very exciting.”

In addition to expanding the area for the existing congregation, another goal with this project was turning the space into a community center that would be open to the public. With the local high school nearby, it presented a perfect opportunity to get local youth more interested in faith and create a safe space for them to pass time. The pickleball courts can also be rented by the public for use throughout the week.

Story Construction’s crews self-performed footings, foundations, structural steel, carpentry, casework, demolition, hardware, and countertops for this project. In addition, the project team navigated the challenges of keeping the church active throughout the second phase of the project. Coordinating the logistics of this site to allow for services on Wednesdays and Sundays involved immense planning on behalf of the project team to ensure a successful project.
