Osceola Wastewater Treatment Plant Headworks Building & Lift Station

Engineer: Veenstra & Kimm, Inc.

Osceola, IA

Story Construction was contracted to deliver major infrastructure improvements for the new City of Osceola Wastewater Treatment Plant, a key component of the community’s long-term strategy to replace its aging facility and support future growth. As part of a multi-contract, roughly $45 million effort, Story Construction was awarded the third of six contracts in August 2020 and began work on the plant.

The scope of work included construction of the new headworks building, influent pump station, and overflow screw pump station. The influent pump station required extensive earthwork, including a 30-foot deep excavation supported by a sheet-piling cofferdam, and the use of a 40,000-pound crane for key equipment placement. The overflow station features two 6-foot diameter screw pumps capable of handling more than 10,000 gallons per minute (15 million gallons per day) when influent flow exceeds the plant’s processing capacity.

Story Construction crews self-performed cast-in-place concrete, buried piping, process piping, and installation of process equipment, demonstrating the firm’s commitment to quality and hands-on project execution. Throughout the project, crews managed site challenges including poor soil conditions and high groundwater associated with proximity to a floodplain.

City staff and project partners praised the Story team for their attention to detail, proactive communication, and ability to adapt to supply chain challenges, contributing to a well-coordinated construction effort.
