Belmond Water Treatment Plant

Belmond Water Treatment Plant

Belmond, IA
Bolton & Menk
2012

The city of Belmond had a great need for a new water treatment facility, as the old facility was more than 50 years old. The new plant is a lime softening plant, similar to the previous plant. The plant includes 330,000 gallons of water storage, 830,000 gallons of fire water capacity, and two 700ft deep wells that can pump 16.5 million gallons of water per day.

Story Construction completed the City of Belmond’s new water treatment plant in 2011 in west Belmond on “the hill.” It’s capable of producing finished water at a rate of 1,150 gallons per minute. Chemical addition includes CO2 for pH control and chlorine gas for disinfection. Built into the new plant is water storage of 330,000 gallons of water. The plant was also built with much added processing capacity to easily handle a major industrial user.

The processing includes a backwash reclaim tank. The backwash water is settled with the clear water returned to the system, and the sludge pumped to waste. The lime sludge is hauled by truck to a city owned lagoon, which has significant capacity.

Story Construction crews self-performed buried piping, interior process piping, process equipment, cast-in-place concrete for footings, walls and slab-on-grade, and precast concrete erection. Story’s contract with the city included coordination with other contractors involved with installation of two 700′ deep wells and installation of raw water, sanitary sewer, and potable water piping necessitated by the new plant.
